An LLB (Bachelor of Legislative Law) is an undergraduate degree in law that prepares students to become legal professionals. The name "LLB" comes from the Latin term Legum Baccalaureus, meaning "Bachelor of Laws." Although it's often expanded as "Bachelor of Legislative Law" in countries like India, the degree covers much more than legislation—it includes the broader study of law and the legal system.

An LLB program typically covers subjects such as:

  • Constitutional law

  • Criminal law

  • Contract law

  • Family law

  • Property law

  • Corporate law

  • Environmental law

  • Legal ethics and professional practice

In India, there are two common pathways:

  • 3-year LLB: For students who have already completed a bachelor's degree in any discipline.

  • 5-year integrated LLB: Combines an undergraduate degree with law, such as BA LLB, BBA LLB, or BCom LLB, and is taken after completing Class 12.

After earning an LLB, graduates can pursue careers as:

  • Advocate (after enrolling with the appropriate State Bar Council and meeting applicable requirements)

  • Legal advisor

  • Corporate lawyer

  • Public prosecutor

  • Judicial services aspirant (subject to eligibility)

  • Legal researcher

  • Compliance officer

  • Law officer in government or private organizations

Eligible

  • 5-year LLB (after Class 12): You must have passed Class 12 from a recognized board. Some colleges may also require a minimum percentage.
  • 3-year LLB (after graduation): You must have completed a bachelor's degree (such as BA, BCom, BSc, or BTech) from a recognized university.
